The thing that makes suburbs like Killara, Pymble and Wahroonga beautiful is also the thing that ruins render on them. Heavy canopy means south and south east walls stay shaded and damp for most of the winter, and shaded damp render grows mould and lichen.

On those elevations we specify a coating with a mould inhibitor and we push the client towards a slightly lighter colour, because it dries faster after rain. Small decisions, but they are the difference between washing the wall down every second year and never thinking about it.

Adding a second storey to a single storey brick home is the standard North Shore renovation, and almost all of them come up in either Hebel panel or blueboard because of the weight saving on the existing footings.

Both need rendering, and both need the right system. Hebel takes a specific base coat and a reinforcing mesh at the joints, blueboard needs its own acrylic system. Using standard sand and cement render on either is a guaranteed callback.
