Cement Rendering Penrith & The Nepean

Penrith gets hotter than anywhere else in Sydney. Forty degree days that the coastal suburbs never see, and a heat island effect through the newer estates where there is not much canopy yet. That has a real effect on render, and it is worth choosing your system around it.

The other Penrith factor is soil. A lot of the Nepean floodplain and the estates built on it sit on reactive clay that swells and shrinks hard between wet and dry. Houses on reactive clay move, and render on a moving house cracks unless it is detailed for it.

Building for forty degree walls

A dark rendered wall in Glenmore Park in February is a genuinely extreme environment. Surface temperatures well over sixty degrees, then a twenty five degree drop overnight, repeated all summer. Plain cement render is brittle and it does not enjoy that cycle.

We use acrylic based systems out here almost by default. They stay flexible, they hold colour under high UV, and they cope with the daily expansion and contraction without opening up.

Reactive clay and movement cracking

If your house has a stair step crack running through the brickwork, rendering over it will not stop it. The render will crack along exactly the same line, usually within the first summer, and then you have paid for a repair that failed.

On homes with active movement we will either recommend getting the footing assessed first, or use a flexible membrane system over the affected area that can accommodate a bit of movement without splitting. We would rather have that conversation before the job than after.
