Why fences punch above their weight
The front fence sits at eye level, it is the closest built structure to the footpath, and it frames everything behind it. A tired blockwork or bare brick fence drags down a house that otherwise presents perfectly well.
It is also a contained job. No scaffold, no working around the whole property, no weeks of disruption. Two to three days and the entire street frontage reads differently.
For anyone who wants a visible change to their property and does not have the budget for a full house render, this is the answer.

What decides the price
Fences are priced on length and height first, then on the number of piers, then on the condition of the existing masonry. A neat block fence in good order is the cheapest possible version. An old brick fence with failing mortar joints that need raking out and repointing before anything else happens is the dearest.
One thing that catches people out is surface area. A fence has two faces plus a top, so a ten metre fence has considerably more coated area than ten metres of house wall does. It is still a small job in absolute terms, but it is not as small as it looks from the footpath.
The other variable is whether the top gets a formed rendered capping or a separate physical cap in stone, concrete or metal. Both work, they cost differently, and the next section explains why skipping it entirely is not an option.
The detail that decides everything
A front fence is the most weather loaded structure on a residential property, and most people never think about why.
A house wall has a roof over it and eaves throwing water clear. A fence has neither. It is exposed on both faces and, critically, on the top. Rain lands directly on the top surface and soaks straight down into the blockwork or brickwork.
That water is what destroys rendered fences. It gets into the masonry, works outward, carries dissolved salt with it, and pushes the render off from behind. It almost always starts along the top edge and works down.
So the top has to be dealt with. Either a proper capping, whether that is a rendered capping formed with a fall and a drip edge, or a physical cap in stone, concrete or metal. Uncapped, a beautifully rendered fence will be blowing along the top edge inside five years.
Matching the house, or not
Two approaches work. Match the fence to the house exactly in colour and texture for a unified contemporary look. Or contrast deliberately, usually a darker fence against a lighter house, which frames the property and gives the frontage depth.
What does not work is nearly matching. A fence one shade off the house reads as a mistake rather than a decision, and everyone notices it even if they cannot say why.
Texture grade is part of this too. A fine texture on the house with a slightly coarser one on the fence reads deliberate and gives the two elements their own weight. The identical texture on both can read flat.

Details worth paying for
The things that make a rendered fence look built rather than coated are all small.
- Letterbox slots with square, clean formed reveals rather than a hole cut afterwards
- Light fittings set flush into the render rather than surface mounted on top of it
- House numbers recessed into a pier
- Consistent pier caps with a proper drip detail
- Render stopped cleanly above ground level rather than running into the soil
What you cannot render
Render needs a rigid masonry substrate. It will not go on Colorbond, timber, or any framed fence, because those move far too much and give render nothing to key into.
If you want a rendered look and currently have a metal or timber fence, the masonry has to be built first. A very common and cost effective compromise is a low rendered masonry base with slats or Colorbond above it, which gives you the rendered presence at eye level for a fraction of a full masonry fence.
